San Francisco's open secret is that it shelters those who don't quite belong anywhere. But there are two kinds. By day, the streets bustle with people who choose to drift between places. By night, the same streets fill with those who have nothing left but to drift between places. The former reassures me with a semblance of human agency that tantalizes, and the latter threatens me with the truth of an unforgiving jungle stripped bare.
I love the tenderness and the peek into the homelessness. I never gave them much thought, here in Germany they are far and few, and usually by choice. Your piece evoke the feeling I have with some people that I had a brush of encounter with, and never to meet again.
Wow, recommended by a friend and I am dumbstruck. Didn’t expect at all to read something packed with such literary brilliance and sensitivity during my leisure screen time before bed. This is really awesome 👏
Well, SF USED to be that kind of place, and I too met some very memorable characters, especially older people who had moved there bak in the 70s and 80s when things were not so crazy, but those days are long gone.

A beautiful piece. First: well seen. Second, well written. A round of applause.
I know you don’t take the word ‘beautiful’ lightly so, thank you :)
Well, you clearly do not either :)
Loved this.
